Roman Catholicism is the faith of more than 93 per cent of the people. Mexico’s long tradition of official anti-clericalism ended in 1991 with the passage of constitutional changes granting legal status to religious institutions and allowing parochial schools. Protestants represent a small but growing minority in Mexico. |

The prevailing and official language is Spanish, which is spoken by the great majority of the population. Around 288 languages are spoken in Mexico, many of which are Native American languages. About 8 per cent of the population speaks Native American languages, the chief of which is Náhuatl, or Aztec. Other Native American languages include Maya, spoken in the Yucatán Peninsula, and Otomí, common in central Mexico. Successive governments have instituted educational programmes to teach Spanish to all Native Americans. |
